According to the Energy Saving Trust, LED bulbs use around 80% less electricity than halogens for the same brightness, and last up to 20 times longer — meaning fewer bulb changes as well as a lower running cost.
Downlights are the fitting most people overlook — recessed kitchen and bathroom spots are often still running old 35W or 50W halogens, on for hours every evening. Swapping the fitting itself (not just the bulb) usually gives the biggest jump in both efficiency and brightness.
Usually not for a straightforward fitting swap on an existing circuit — that's typically non-notifiable work. It still has to be done to BS 7671, but there's no separate paperwork required beyond our own job certificate.
It's different if you're adding a brand new lighting circuit — a garden lighting scheme run from the consumer unit, say — or working within the special zones around a bath or shower. That is notifiable under Part P. As a NICEIC registered contractor, we self-certify either way, so you don't need to think about which category your job falls into.
